English Speech Contest for Senior High School Students around East Java and State Univ. of Surabaya Students

A. Concept

English Speech Contest is a kind of English application whose purpose is to increase the capability of the participants to deliver such information in English.

The concept of English Speech Contest will be done in two sessions: qualification and final. The participant will have a speech according to the defined theme at least 7 minutes maximally for 10 minutes. In the qualification, the participants may choose one of the three themes that have been given. The participants are obligated to give the script copy of the speech to the committee 10 minutes before the activity begun.

In final, there will be 10 participants who have passed the qualification to compete one another in this session. They will deliver a speech according to the new theme which has been defined by the committee maximally for 10 minutes. Then, the jury will give a question concerning to the speech interactively.

B. Scoring

Scoring for this Contest consists of 4 aspects. There are:

1. Matter

Matter is a kind of scoring which is looked from the correlation of the content of the speech with the defined theme and how the participants master the speech.

2. Method

Method is a kind of scoring of speech looked from how the participants deliver their speech. Method comes within eye-contacts, gesture, and expression of the participants.

3. Fluency

Fluency is a kind of scoring that consists of pronunciation and the fluency of speaking in the speech.

4. Time

For English Speech Contest, the committee gives maximal time of 10 minutes for each participants and 7 minutes minimal. If the participants have a speech more than the maximal time or less than the minimal time so there will be there the reduction of score.

5. Interactive speech

Interactive speech is a kind of marking that is done specially in the final. The jury may ask a question about the content of the speech to the participants.

6. Range of scoring

Total score is a calculation of each aspects, then it will be calculated from the juries. Each aspect of scoring has the range as shown in table below:

Winner : certificate, Trophy, and cash money Rp. 700.000,-

Runner up : certificate, Trophy, and cash money Rp. 500.000,-

2^nd runner up: certificate, Trophy, and cash money Rp. 250.000,-

Ø For State University of Surabaya students category

Winner : certificate, Trophy, and cash money Rp. 400.000,-

Runner up : certificate, Trophy, and cash money Rp. 250.000,-

2^nd runner up: certificate, Trophy, and cash money Rp. 100.000,-

Ø Facilities: Snack and Certificate for all participants
